Oslo's first outdoors Ibsen festival — performing the world's second most-staged playwright in English, in the country where he was born and wrote his greatest works.
Launching summer 2026, Ibsen on the Fjord brings Henrik Ibsen's plays to life at Akershus Festning on the Oslofjord. Inspired by the great outdoor Shakespeare festivals of North America — Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Bard on the Beach in Vancouver — we are building Norway's equivalent: accessible, international, and rooted in one of the world's great theatrical heritages.
Our productions are staged for the growing international community in Oslo, for visitors who travel to Norway to walk in Ibsen's footsteps, and for audiences who have always wanted to experience his work in the country that made him. Every summer, against the backdrop of the fjord, we will bring Ibsen's classics to life.
We are building toward 2028 — Ibsenåret, the 200th anniversary of Ibsen's birth — when Oslo will celebrate its greatest playwright on a global stage. Ibsen on the Fjord will be at the heart of that celebration.
